Unpack all furnishing components. You will find the head and footboards fully assembled but the side rails and log slats for mattress support must be assembled. Notice that on one tenon (machined log end) of each separate log there will be a letter or letters and in at least one mortise of each headboard or footboard, there is a matching letter(s) or mate to this part.
In the location where the furnishing is to be used, lay the parts out according to general configuration of piece using the above matching letters to guide you. Eventually, each joint will be secured with one lag bolt. We suggest that you lay the lags out with furniture parts as well. Washers provided must be used with each lag to assure proper tightening of joint.
Loose fit and assemble all parts without securing with bolts to start with. It works best with a helper. When all log parts are loose fitted, push each joint together as far as possible. Use of a soft block of wood and hammer is necessary to manually tighten the joint. With a washer on the lag, start lag into predrilled hole with socket wrench of the proper size. Tighten lag using socket wrench until the joint pulls together and the bevel or taper on the log tenon just barely touches the log with the mortise, or comes within about 1/8th inch of this taper. Do not over tighten the lag or it can break or strip the hole out. Repeat this on all joints and install wooden plug over countersunk lag holes, tapping lightly with a hammer.
