Frontier Log Furniture
Assembly Suggestions for Frontier Furniture Log
Beds, Mortise and Tenon Construction

Canopy Bed Assembly Instructions

Due to the specific construction technique (mortise & tenon) used in manufacturing the furnishings you have selected, some on site assembly will be required.  Although this furnishing is not difficult to assemble, Frontier feels you should be aware of what's involved.  It should be noted that all similar log furniture by any manufacturer is going to be shipped this way and need the same type of assembly.   There is no way to economically ship these furnishings fully assembled.

Unpack all furnishing components.  You will find the head and footboards fully assembled but the side rails and log slats for mattress support must be assembled.  Notice that on one tenon (machined log end) of each separate log there will be a letter or letters and in at least one mortise of each headboard or footboard, there is a matching letter(s) or mate to this part.

In the location where the furnishing is to be used, lay the parts out according to general configuration of piece using the above matching letters to guide you.  Eventually, each joint will be secured with one lag bolt.  We suggest that you lay the lags out with furniture parts as well.  Washers provided must be used with each lag to assure proper tightening of joint.

Loose fit and assemble all parts without securing with bolts to start with.  It works best with a helper.  When all log parts are loose fitted, push each joint together as far as possible.  Use of a soft block of wood and hammer is necessary to manually tighten the joint.  With a washer on the lag, start lag into predrilled hole with socket wrench of the proper size.  Tighten lag using socket wrench until the joint pulls together and the bevel or taper on the log tenon just barely touches the log with the mortise, or comes within about 1/8th inch of this taper.  Do not over tighten the lag or it can break or strip the hole out.  Repeat this on all joints and install wooden plug over countersunk lag holes, tapping lightly with a hammer.

Tools

Parts

9/16 socket and driver Headboard / Footboard
Two people 4 Side Rails / 3 Cross Rails
Strap or long rope 3 Machined Round Slats
  Bolt / Plug Package
  • STEP ONE - Ensure that you have all parts to your new Frontier Queen, Full or Twin Canopy Bed.

  • STEP TWO - Place head board in desired location (ensure that you have enough room between the wall and the headboard to insert your 6" lag bolts).

  • STEP THREE -  Locate both lower and upper rail assemblies (lower assembly has 3 machined peeled round slats and upper assembly has 3 natural log cross rails).  You can tell which rails go on top or bottom by a # followed by a letter on the log tenon.  This # and letter matches a # and letter in the big hole on the head board or foot board.

  • STEP FOUR - Assemble lower rail assembly, once together insert tenons into bottom head board.  Then assemble upper rail assembly, once together have one person on each side of the assembly and in unison insert into head board.  (A good idea is to strap assembly together).

  • STEP FIVE - With one person holding upper rail assembly, the other person move to foot board, placing it in position.  Moving foot board (not upper rail assembly) insert tenon into foot board hole (carefully moving foot board back and forth until the upper and lower rail assemblies are all the way into foot board).

  • STEP SIX - Once all tenons are inserted completely into the head board and foot board, insert all the 6" lag bolts (do not over-tighten).  After all lag bolts are sunk, insert wooden plugs.  After wooden plugs are inserted, move canopy bed back to wall or desired location (this may take a few people).

  • STEP SEVEN - You're done!  Now apply mattresses and bedding and enjoy!!
